Collection: Herencia
This collection showcases Monica's unique artistic process, which involves layering plaster onto a wooden panel, a technique she learned from her father while working alongside him. The pieces in this collection serve as a reflection of Monica's inheritance or "herencia" in Spanish. She sees her herencia as a dual concept, encompassing both the Mexican culture and traditions passed down to her by her parents and the practical knowledge and work ethic instilled in her by her family.
Monica's latest works in this collection are her most sculptural yet, as she challenged herself to use plaster in a way that evokes the delicate textures of cloth or paper. As she worked, she discovered that her childhood memories were reflected in the flowing forms of her art, recalling moments such as hanging clothes to dry in her grandmother's backyard or sewing dresses for her dolls. These memories are referenced in the titles of her pieces.
