Plaster and mixed media on panel
32" W x 72.5" H x 5.5" D
Titled "Chiqui," a nickname referencing Curiel's short height, the work is scaled to Curiel's eye level, grounding its proportions in a personal physical perspective. Built from layers of hand-sculpted plaster using draping techniques borrowed from garment construction, "Chiqui" transforms construction materials into sculptural forms on panel. By blurring the distinction between wall relief, painting, and sculpture, the work questions the need to classify art within a single discipline.
