Love Letters To My Mexican Heritage
Fiber artist and ceramist Nicole McLaughlin and sculptor Monica Curiel came together in 2021 to create a collaborative series grounded in their shared cultural lineage. Their partnership merges distinct material languages: fiber, clay, plaster, and natural pigments, while drawing from parallel family histories and inherited craft traditions.
This 2021 collection was conceived as an exploration of identity, ancestry, and the dualities present in Mexican cultural practices. By uniting their methods and perspectives, the artists built a framework for examining femininity, masculinity, labor, and cultural memory through material experimentation. The works themselves seek to forge a connection to Mexican heritage through materials rooted in ancestral processes.
Intertwining fiber and plaster, bound together with indigo, the pieces become intimate gestures, love letters to their lineage. Each work emerges from the merging of their identities, the resonance of their personal histories, and the conceptual threads shared across their artistic practices.
